PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) is a protein found in the human prostate. Usually the serum concentration of PSA is 3 ng/ml or less. PSA is prostate specific but is not cancer specific.
There is a direct correlation between PSA and patient age. Serum concentration depends on patient age, so there is the potential to make this test more useful for early detection of prostate cancer by narrowing the band of normal PSA for the young and widening it for the older. Age specific MIX PSA ranges are:
Age 40-49: 0.0 - 2.5 ng/ml
Age 50-59: 0.0 - 3.5 ng/ml
Age 60-69: 0.0 - 4.5 ng/ml
Age 70-80: 0.0 - 6.5 ng/ml
Early diagnosis of prostate cancer can lead to curative treatment, PSA is a very valuable in making the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
